$1.4 Million Homes in Maine, Illinois and the District of Columbia

Monhegan Island, Maine | $1.395 Million

A renovated 1963 Cape Cod-style house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a two-acre lot

Monhegan, an island about 10 miles off the coast of Maine, has long attracted artists inspired by the rugged landscape, including Edward Hopper, George Bellows and Rockwell Kent. Today, there are a handful of art galleries on Main Street, along with a small grocery store and a cafe. These businesses and several bed-and-breakfast inns are less than a 10-minute walk from the house.

Ferries make the trip to Port Clyde, on the mainland, in about an hour. From there, Portland is about two hours away.

Size: 1,473 square feet

Price per square foot: $947

Indoors: There are no paved roads on the island, so this home sits at the end of a dirt path. Wide stone steps and a flight of exterior stairs lead up to the house.

The front door opens into a tiled foyer with access to a full bathroom that has a combined tub and shower. Straight ahead from the foyer is a double-height living room with hardwood floors, glass doors that open to a deck, and a fireplace with a raised hearth flanked by built-in benches and bookshelves. (The furnishings in this room, and throughout the house, are available to buy.)

The hardwood floors continue through a wide doorway into a window-lined dining area with a built-in banquette. This space is open to a kitchen with a center island that seats three, new stainless steel appliances and walls lined with glossy tile.

An open staircase in the living room rises to the second floor, where all three bedrooms are off an open hallway. The primary bedroom is at one end of the hall, next to a bathroom with a walk-in shower lined with stone tile. Another bedroom is at the opposite end of the hall. Folding doors at the center of the hall open to the third bedroom, which could be used as a family room.

Outdoor space: The deck off the living room has views of the ocean and the island’s mature trees. This property includes a pond, a new well and a new septic system.

Taxes: $5,154 (estimated)
